Abstract  In the globalization era, the boundaries between global and local places are increasingly blurred. The relationship between place and residents are also increasingly influenced by the rapid economic development. The globalization and rapid economic development have led to a global sense of place, which regards the place as an open and dynamically changing system. This paper aims to investigate how residents' sense of place would change with the development of the place under the situation that the place is more and more open. Based on grounded theory, we conducted in-depth interviews with 30 local residents to understand their perception of the physical and social changes in Lizhiwan historic district and the trajectories of local residents' sense of place since the 1940s. This paper analyzes in-depth interviews data in MAXQDA software and investigates the impacts of physical and social changes on residents' sense of place in Lizhiwan historical district. We find that the residents' sense of place is largely affected by ecological environment, construction and ancillary services, collective memory, types of activities, interpersonal relationships, etc.
